NOW TO YOUR COMPOSING TIP FOR THE WEEK...
Once again, I'm revisiting something I've addressed before because I get a lot of questions about color, especially regarding how to choose a palette for painting. I'm going to take you
through a simple process to show you my method. It's worked for me for many years. Perhaps it might work for you, too.
We begin with a subject, a reference I ripped off from Pixabay: purple pansies.
Principle: No single color is a single note. Instead, it is a chord of three notes. Those notes are hue, value. and saturation (also called intensity and chroma)
So when finding any palette of colors, I need ability to create all three. Here are the questions to ask:
Step 1: What hues am I seeing?
Red Violet, Yellow Green, Blue Violet, Orangish Yellow
Step 2: What value range do I see for each of these hues?
Step 3: What complementary color do I need to create the variations in saturation? I work that out on the color
wheel.
Step 4: Within these hues thus far, do I have the ability to warm each of them?
Step 5: Within these hues, do I have the ability to cool each of them?
Step 6: What tube colors do I need to make all this happen?
There is no single answer for this one, but my choices most likely would be
Utrecht hansa yellow light - Rembrandt cadmium yellow deep - Daniel Smith Sap Green - Gamblin Ultramarine Blue - Gamblin Quinacridone Violet - Gamblin titanium white.
CAREFUL PLANNING FOSTERS CREATIVITY AND SPONTANIETY
If we do careful planning before we start painting, we give ourselves the freedom and the confidence to explore possibilities freely. It's no different from making sure your car is in
good shape and has plenty of fuel before taking a trip.
Have yourself a delightful weekend of discovery!
