In recent coaching sessions with students, the concept of our visual language has come up, so I think right now is a good time to say something about
that.
We know language to be a system of communication. That means that some being is communicating and some receiver is
comprehending (or not). For the communication to be successful, a structure is needed. The success of transmission depends upon the communicator's use of that structure.
The structure of the English language uses nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, etc. Each plays a role in the specificity of what gets conveyed. The universal
visual language has color, value, shape, size, direction, texture and line. We call these visual elements and we work these together to form a visual message.
The English language has ways if forming words into sentences and sentences into paragraphs. The visual language has methods of turning
elements into images.
No, in the visual language, this is not spools of thread with scissors on top. In the visual language it is repeated shapes overlapped by a
contrasting shape, it is a variety of colors, it is repeated textures overlapped with contrasting textures, it is repeated sizes overlapped with a different size, it is shapes moving in a dominantly horizontal direction, it is gradating and contrasting values.
If I show you these elements as I see them, I will give you my interpretation of these spools of thread overlapped by this pair of
scissors.
I could use this image as a reference, change some of the elements and give a new interpretation like this...
And that doesn't even scratch the surface of possibilities.
