Tangents, often called "sore thumbs", are those sneaky images that align with one another so that one visually merges into another or one image appears
as if growing out of another. We've addressed this in a previous post, but taking another look might be helpful. Using just the definition I give you here, can you find tangents in the images below?
What about this group of images? Can you find any tangents here?
Here are the tangents I found in this second group of photos.
So why do tangents matter? They weaken the composition, they create a discomfort within the viewer and they weaken both images included in
the tangent. How do we solve the problem? Overlap, shift shapes or delete shapes. The solution will vary depending upon what's happening.
Most important, though is that you pay attention. If you're painting in plein air, look for them before you begin, then
if you see tangents, shift your viewpoint.
