Drawing can be one of the most stimulating things we do as artists. Yet I hear from so many who say they don't care about drawing, they just want to paint. What so many
don't realize is that not only drawing is the foundation of good painting, it can bring so much joy into our artistic lives. Drawing should never be a laborious activity for getting it right, rather a diving in to exploring.
One of my favorite things to do is to play with drawing movement during a baseball game on TV. (Yes, I'm a big fan of baseball!) I like to begin at the top
of a page in my sketchbook and in linear movement, capture the players' movement from one side of the page to the other, just like jotting down a note to a good buddy .
Here's one of those pages.
Can you feel just how much fun I was having?
Giving yourself the freedom to draw movement is ideal for discovering the pure joy that drawing can give us. Let your pencil draw drooping,
swinging, flipping, curving slowing, curving rapidly, falling, gliding--all these within images. There's no better way to break out of the barrier assumed about drawing.
WITNESSING THE JOY OF DRAWING IN ACTION
Not only are James and Jeannette Gurney married to each other, they also are painting buddies. James has been sharing with us his journey with painting for many years.
In a number of his videos, we see Jeannette painting, too. Finally, we get to see what she's been doing.
Some of you have already seen the video below, but the joy Jeannette finds in drawing is so apparent, I want to share it with all of you.
Why not explore the freedom of drawing during your weekend!
