When I visit sites like Daily Paintworks, I see many paintings that fall short because of one thing: a disregard for value structure.
Let's start here: why do we see values? Think about it, you would see nothing without light. When a single light source is
strong, you see the shadows it creates as well as the forms not in shadow in a full range of values. When the source is dim, such as a small candle, everything is either in shadow or low light, but within that shadow you can still see forms, but in a narrow value range.
That range is the value structure that exists because of the light source - how bright it is, where it is
located, whether it is direct or diffused. Without consideration of what the light is doing to your images, your value structure will be either non existent or weak.
Using the image directly above, in pencil do a full range value study from the darkest darks you see to the lightest lights.
THEN using the same image, do a study as if in candle light where your value range is this:
