For many emerging artists, the thought of drawing brings sighs, ughs, and for some, arrghs. Time after time I've been told: "I don't want to draw; I just want to paint." What I know is that if every painter discovered the joy of gesture drawing, that attitude would change.
Gesture drawing is a wonderful way to quickly study a subject, to get to know it before committing it to paint, and THAT can take away the struggle while painting. Painting with the confidence of having thoroughly engaged with the subject gives the artist more freedom of expression and sponteneity.
