You probably have heard multiple times that values are the foundational structure of every good painting. But what does the word "value" relate to? What is value's true role in realistic painting?
One major role of values in realistic painting is to describe shadows. Sure, it also describes something about colors we observe and
use, but if you study nature closely, you will discover that most of the dark values you find are in shadow.
When we can switch our attention away from what it is and focus on finding shadows, we
begin to see shadow shapes, regardless of the subject. We begin to see how the values of those shadows form a strong construct we can use in our painting.
We see everything because of a light source. If in your painting, images appear to be from inconsistent light sources, your technique
might be to perfection, but your painting will still feel awkward or communicate a sense of unease. Locating shadows is an ideal way to define a consistent light source and give your work a strong design structure.
