Have you noticed that when you're painting, you are not worried about running out of toilet paper? There's no better place to be than in that space of creating, especially if it's playful creating.
PLAY WITH THIS FOR A WHILE
In Quick Tip 216, I show you one method for working with color as a subject. In a free video on my website I show you how to create a notan based on separating shadow and not in shadow. Now, you can put those two concepts together and create a fun little abstract painting that might just make your day.
- Watch the free video, then use the methods I show you there and create a notan pattern based on the reference of your choice.
- Then watch (again, if you've already seen it) Quick Tip 261. (Both are linked above.)
- Now put aside your reference and use the notan pattern plus the method I show you in Quick Tip 261 to create an abstract using analogous colors. Mix darker colors (from middle value to the darkest dark) and place them, however you like, in the dark area of the notan, then put all your lighter mixtures (colors from middle value
to the lightest light) in the light part of the notan pattern.
- Have fun!
Painter Wolf Kahn, one of the last living painters grounded in the abstract movement of the 20th century, lived to be 92, but left us on March 15. Speaking of
color as a subject, that's what Wolf spent his entire professional life doing. His images serve as carriers for color rather than being references. They are containers that carry colors living and breathing in the influence of fields of other colors.
Wolf's work blends the abstract era, specifically Color Field painting, with realism via atmospheric qualities of Impressionism, but with a spontaneity that communicates an authentic progression rather than an intentional fusion. His hundreds of paintings, whether expressed in oils or pastels, communicate pure love of the process.
His departure has left a real vacuum in the world of art. I am sorry we lost him.
HAVE YOURSELF A SAFE AND PLAYFUL WEEKEND!
