How's Your Foreshortening Working for You?

Foreshortening scares the socks off a lot of people. Whether it's the word itself or what I call the "image trap" or some other scary notion, the concept trips up a lot of folks. In fact, when something is foreshortened, the reason is that you are looking either down at it, up at it or along its side.

Enter the "image trap"--we get trapped when our attention focuses on WHAT IT IS rather than WHAT WE ARE SEEING. But that is an easy one to correct. We can switch our attention and begin looking at the distance between edges.

The arrows here point towards edges. When we focus just on that distance and compare one distance to that of adjoining shapes, we see images in an entirely different way. We find that suddenly, they become easy to draw. Oh by the way, THIS is foreshortening.
